Thumbelina When we first heard about this pint size American Staffie mix Thumbelina, it was through an email alert send out by the New Hope Staff at the Brooklyn ACC. One of the dogs who had been brought in as a stray was set to be euthanized. She was only a puppy at 10 months old, but clearly just had a litter of puppies herself. Her puppies were probably taken from her at too young an age and sold and Thumbelina was now homeless, starving and scared. Lost and unable to find her puppies, the ACC picked her up as a stray and brought her to shelter. The staff immediately fell in love with this sweet, adorable puppy-mommy. She had nothing but love to give to any and all she met, canine and human alike. But as all too often happens, Thumbelina was overlooked in adoptions due to her post birth condition and the wear and tear on her little 34 lbs body. The staff was desperately seeking help for this little American Staffie with a little French Bull dog thrown in for good measure. Sadly no one came forward. Everyone at the shelter was beside themselves with dread knowing their little girl was set to be put down the following day when a call came into SFTH. It was a volunteer who had walked dogs for us in the past and now wanted to foster one of our rescues. Thumbelina was the first one to come to mind. She was pulled from the euthanasia list (again) while arrangements were made, and late Friday evening, Thumbelina was brought to her foster's apt.

As you can see from the pictures taken that first night, Thumbelina is happy beyond words and wasn't sure what to do next...kiss, hug or roll around non stop on one of her new beds. Although Thumbelina is now safe, she will still need a forever home. That shouldn't be too hard since her foster mom says she is perfect in every way. She greets dogs eagerly, first checking to see if they might be one of her long lost puppies. Once she realizes they are not one of hers, she decides the next best thing is to be a puppy herself and our little social butterfly has won over many people and dogs these last couple of days. Our trainer says Thumbelina shows no aggression and holds no grudges. Her foster mom adores her and has given her the nickname Piglet, since she can easily be mistaken for one if its dark enough! Thumbelina can go to a home with older kids and other dogs as well as being the only pet. She has a vet appointment to determine the best time for us to spay her, which should be in a couple of weeks. She is up to date on her shots and is healthy in every way.
