Is Our Country Going to the Dogs?

Literally and figuratively, has our country gone to the dogs? In a time of such upheaval that is still going on in our economy and dealing with the aftermath of Haiti, it may seem meaningless to examine what is taking place in the treatment of animals. But is it? The past year, I have immersed myself in the animal rescue world only to discover atrocities that exist all over the United States. Most people look the other way or claim that animal rights is not so important, deeming the animal rights people “crazy” and “radical.” But look beneath the surface of the inhumane treatment of animals and the picture becomes clearer. The inhumanity that exists tells a story that we, as socially responsible citizens, should be listening to with a third ear.

My dog is on a wicked diet. She was living with grandma for a few years and I brought her back home with me before the holidays when I saw how incredibly unhealthy this poor girl had gotten. In just 5 years she had gained so much weight, it deformed all 4 of her legs (she was too fat to hold herself up, the vet said so her legs compensated by bowing out) and instead of the lean wasted, muscle bound dog-run queen that she once was, she couldn’t walk around the block without stopping 5 times. It was so sad to see how an unintentional act (overfeeding was my mom’s way of telling the dog she loved her) could cause so much damage.
Well, now she’s with me and all kinds of things are changing! She’s on a very strict diet, and although she still looks pregnant, she is losing weight and has much more energy and stamina. She is starting to drag me to the dog run again! what have I been doing you ask? Well I feed her a half a cup of wholistic healthy dog food (with her arthritis pill) mixed with a bit of moist food and then as many carrots and green beans as she wants at night. To mix it up, we do apples and broccoli among other normally thought of as “people food”.
It is working like a charm! Shes not giving me the sad doggy face that says “Why do you starve me?” and I know what she is eating is good for her and helping her slim down to her sexy doggy figure of her youth!
Here is a little snip-it from a great article from The Woof Report on people food for your pet:
…..
Lean meats. No surprises here, doggies love meats. Just make sure you serve only the lean stuff. Eating high-fat chicken skins, steaks and roasts can lead to gastrointestinal upset or even pancreatitis (a painful and sometimes fatal condition for dogs).
Vegetables. Try mixing in some carrot sticks, green beans, celery sticks, cucumber slices, zucchini slices, raw broccoli and raw cauliflower.
Fruit. When serving fruit to your dog, make sure to remove all of the seeds first. Apple slices, orange slices, bananas, peaches and watermelon are all good choices for your best friend.
Carbs. Cooked baked potatoes or instant mashed potatoes just might be a hit with your dog. You can also try plain cooked bread for a doggie snack (without nuts or raisins!) or plain, cooked pasta and white rice are good too. Some veterinarians even recommend serving plain rice with some boiled chicken to dogs that have upset stomachs.
Other Foods to Offer. Dogs live for this stuff: Cheerios, cooked eggs, peanut butter, oatmeal, yogurt (plain, lowfat, unsweetened, unflavored), cottage cheese and cheese.

Its quite telling how uneducated we still are about the state of pet overpopulation and how many animals are killed each year… and how some people know the facts and still don’t care.
PetSmart Charities Survey Reveals Motives for Pet Adoption

In a group of animal lovers or “The Price is Right” hosts, it’s easy to see a passion for adopting homeless pets and controlling the pet population. But thanks to a national survey commissioned by PetSmart Charities, we now have an insight to the overall national perceptions and opinions about pets.
Among 1,000 new pet owners (those who acquired a dog or cat in the past year), the study found that only 24 percent were adopted from shelters. This means a whopping 76 percent of pets were received from sources other than shelters, with the primary reason being a desire for a specific pure breed.
Interestingly, when those who purchased pets were asked what might motivate them to choose shelter adoption instead, knowing that “millions of purebred animals end up in shelters” was found to be the least motivating factor.
Additional findings are available at: http://petsmartcharities.org/research/
